Technology freight breaks the assumption every other sector runs on: that value roughly tracks weight. A single pallet can carry more value than a full container of almost anything else — and everything about how it is routed, secured and insured has to follow from that.

01 — Value density

Two identical pallets, two completely different problems

They occupy the same floor space, take the same forklift move and cost roughly the same to fly. Everything else about them — security, insurance, routing, who is allowed to touch them — is different, and the freight rate is the least interesting part of the comparison.

Packaging, textiles, hardware. Losing it is a cost, an insurance claim and an inconvenience.

No values are quoted here on purpose. Yours are commercially sensitive and we do not need them published to plan around them — we need them declared correctly on the paperwork, which is a different conversation and a private one.
02 — Launch

The stage where nothing is allowed to happen

Product launches are the one logistics problem where arriving early is a failure. Stock has to be in position, in country, cleared — and then sit untouched until an hour that was set months ago and will not move.

Stage 01

Out of the factory, frequently under an existing confidentiality regime.

Stage 02

Moved and customs cleared ahead of time, so the border is never the thing standing between you and a launch.

Stage 03 — locked

In secure storage, sealed, access logged, and no distribution regardless of who asks. The hardest part is not the moving, it is the not moving.

Stage 04

Released to a schedule agreed in advance, so every destination hits the same hour rather than a queue.

Plan the embargo before the freight. Where stock has to be held, for how long, under what access control and who can authorise release — those decide the routing, not the other way round. A lane that gets the goods there fastest is useless if there is nowhere secure to put them.
03 — Controls

Four gates, and all four have to pass

Technology is the sector most likely to be caught by export controls, and the least likely to expect it. Components with an obvious civilian use can still be controlled, and the obligation sits with the exporter — not with the carrier who moved it.

Gate one

What it is

Technical classification of the item itself. Specification decides control status, so two parts that look identical on a purchase order can sit either side of a threshold.

Gate two

Where it is going

Destination screening, including anywhere the consignment transits or is stored on the way. A permitted final destination does not make every leg permitted.

Gate three

Who receives it

Denied-party and end-user screening on the consignee, the notify party and anyone with control of the goods after delivery.

Gate four

What it will be used for

End-use checks. The hardest of the four, because it depends on what a buyer intends rather than on anything visible in the shipment.

Fail any one gate and the booking stops. We would rather lose the shipment than move it and find out later. So would you.
This describes the process, not your obligations. Which regime applies, what licences exist and where the thresholds sit all depend on your products and the countries involved, and they change. We run the screening and flag what we find — your compliance function owns the decision.
04 — The way back

Most tech ships more than once

Repairs, warranty returns, trade-ins, lease refreshes and end-of-life recovery. The reverse flow in technology is not an exception to handle — for many businesses it moves comparable volume to the forward one, and it carries a data problem the outbound leg never had.

Collected from the end user, tracked against the case number, and routed to repair or replacement without the customer chasing anyone.

Into the workshop and back out again, with the turnaround counted — because it decides how much float stock you have to own.

Refresh & recovery

Fleet and estate replacement where the old units come out as the new ones go in, on the same visit rather than as a second project.

Flow 04

Data-bearing assets

Anything with storage in it carries the customer's data until it is dealt with. Chain of custody, and sanitisation certified by whoever performs it.

05 — Deployment

Delivered is not the same as installed

Data centre and estate hardware arrives heavy, stacks badly and cannot go through a normal goods-in door. A pallet left in a loading bay is not a completed delivery — it is a problem handed to somebody whose job it was not.

Site access is the constraint, not the freight. Lift capacity, floor loading, door widths, delivery windows and who is on site to receive it decide the plan. We check those before quoting rather than discovering them on the day.

Where you need it, that extends to unpacking, positioning to the rack, taking the packaging away and returning the pallets — so what is left behind is equipment in place rather than cardboard and a signature.
