In most growing businesses it sits with whoever has time, gets reviewed when an invoice looks wrong, and is compared on one number. That is why it is frequently the largest uncontrolled cost in the company — and one of the easiest to fix once somebody looks at it properly.
When people say they have three quotes, they almost always mean three base rates. Everything below the line is real money, appears on the invoice, and is rarely part of the comparison at all.
The failure is rarely the freight. It is that the arrangement which worked perfectly at the last volume quietly stops working at this one, and nobody notices until a customer does.
The goods move fine. The commercial invoice does not match the packing list, nobody agreed an incoterm, and the shipment sits at a border while two companies work out whose problem it is.
The same lane, re-quoted every week at whatever rate was offered that day, with addresses re-typed each time. Slow, inconsistent and the source of most wrong-address deliveries.
Shipping is still somebody's third job. There is no forecast, so nothing can be planned, so everything is booked late — which is the most expensive way to buy freight there is.
Stock sitting in the wrong country, duty paid on goods you have not sold, and a working capital problem that reads on the accounts as a sales problem.
Honestly, and about this month rather than about how things are supposed to work. Nothing here needs looking up.
You are running this well for your size. Worth a rate review at some point, but nothing here is urgent and you should not let anyone tell you otherwise.
Normal for a business growing faster than its processes. Most of it is fixable in an afternoon of setup rather than a change of provider — saved lanes, a named contact, an agreed incoterm.
Shipping is costing you more than the invoices show, and probably costing you customers too. This is worth an hour with someone who does it for a living — ours or anybody's.
Lanes, weights and how often. We price your actual routes against what you pay now, itemised so you can see where the money currently goes — including the charges under the line. And if the honest answer is that changing would not save you enough to be worth the disruption, you will get that instead.
